Social Media Video Sizes: The One-Page Cheat Sheet

Publishing one video to five platforms shouldn't require five research sessions. This page condenses the video specs for TikTok, X (Twitter), LinkedIn, Facebook, and Pinterest into one reference — plus a workflow section on how to shoot once and export for everything. (YouTube and Instagram have their own dedicated guides: YouTube, Instagram.)

Reading the pattern

Squint at the table and three shapes cover everything:

If you produce just two masters — one 9:16 vertical and one 16:9 landscape — you can cover every placement above, with 1:1/4:5 crops derived from either when a feed-optimized variant is worth the extra export.

Shoot once, export three ways

  1. Frame for the tightest crop. If a video will live as both 16:9 and 9:16, keep the subject inside the central square during shooting. Everything outside the center will be lost in one crop or the other.
  2. Edit on a 16:9 or open-gate timeline, then reframe per-export. Most editors (Premiere, Resolve, CapCut, Final Cut) have auto-reframe tools that track the subject when converting between ratios.
  3. Export masters at 1080 on the short side: 1920×1080 landscape, 1080×1920 vertical, 1080×1350 portrait. Every platform above accepts these without upscaling.
  4. Burn in captions per format, not per platform — caption position that works for 9:16 TikTok also works for 9:16 Facebook Reels.

Safe-zone habit: every vertical feed (TikTok, Reels, Shorts) overlays UI on the bottom quarter and right edge. If you keep text inside the central 80% of the frame, one caption layout survives every platform.

Specs that quietly change

Aspect ratios are stable — 9:16 has been 9:16 for a decade — but maximum durations, file size caps, and bitrate handling change frequently and vary by account type. Treat duration limits you read anywhere (including here) as "verify in the app before a big campaign." Ratios and resolutions in the table above are the durable part.

Convert your own dimensions

Adapting existing footage — like fitting a 4:3 archive clip into a 9:16 frame, or scaling a 2:3 Pinterest asset to a specific width? The calculator locks any ratio and computes the missing side instantly.
